In 1836, Dr. Henry Schumann manumitted 17 enslaved individuals who journeyed from Winston-Salem to Liberia aboard the ship Lafayette. They settled in Millsburg and Edina City, carrying with them the hopes of a new life.
In Winston-Salem, the "Little Liberia" community flourished, evolving into the historic Happy Hill neighborhood. In 2019, a historic marker was installed at the corner of Liberia and Free Streets to honor this legacy.
Today, Winston-Salem and Buchanan, Liberia are Sister Cities, united by this powerful history and a shared commitment to the future.
